This immersive tour transports visitors into the lived experiences of the Turovitz and Hatch families, who once called public housing home. Through carefully preserved artifacts, personal narratives, and interactive storytelling, you’ll explore the lives of various residents of the Jane Addams Homes, from The New Deal to the Great Migration to today.
Experience a kosher kitchen in the Turovitz home, hear the echoes of activism and resilience in the Hatch family living room, and uncover stories of struggle, joy, and community that shaped the nation. Whether you have a personal connection to public housing or are discovering this history for the first time, the tour offers a powerful and eye-opening journey through the past, present, and future of affordable housing in America.
Join us to see, hear, and feel the stories that continue to shape our cities and communities.
Please note: The Historic Apartment tours are designed to be best enjoyed by visitors ages 11 and up. There are other experiences throughout the Museum for younger visitors, and we plan to offer family-focused tours in the near future.
